Rep. Nunes (R-CA) Endorses Use of N-Word

Update: Apparently TPM already covered this and included video.  Sorry I missed that, I recommend checking out their story and video.

I had never heard of Rep. Devin Nunes, the Republican who represents CA-21, until he was interviewed on C-SPAN today.  But he is pretty impressive in his ability to stick to the GOP talking points.  In his view, the health care bill is "socialism" being passed using "totalitarian tactics."  And if an opponent of the bill calls an African-American congressman the N-word to express his displeasure, well, that's perfectly understandable to Devin Nunes.

Transcript below:

Interviewer:  A lot of angry comments yesterday aimed at a couple of your colleagues, including Barney Frank and Congressman John Lewis, using the N-word as some of the protesters jeered at him as he walked the halls of the capitol.

Devin Nunes:  Well, I think that when you use totalitarian tactics, people begin to act crazy, and I think, you know, there's people who have every right to say what they want.  If they want to smear someone, they can do it, it's not appropriate, and I think I would stop short of characterizing the 20,000 people, that all of them were doing that.  I was...

I: (interrupting) Those were just some of the stories, just some of the comments.

DN: Yeah, of course, and I think that the left loves to play up a couple incidents here or there, anything to draw attention away from what they are really doing.  And that is, that they have 250-some Democrats in the House, they need 216 Democrats, they don't have them, they're buying votes, and [blah blah blah about the totalitarian procedural tactics].

Now, it's true that he characterized what happened as "crazy" and "inappropriate" but the overall impression of what he said is that this is an unfortunate but understandable reaction to what is happening and the Democrats are using the isolated incident as a smokescreen.  He certainly did not denounce what happened.  In my book, blaming the victim for this is the same as endorsing what the teabagger said.

This is the fourth term for Congressman Whatshisname, so he is not exactly a backbencher despite being totally anonymous.  He should feel free to denounce teabaggers, so the fact that he didn't speaks volumes.  Obviously nobody should give a shit what Rep. Whozit says because he is a non-entity.  Just don't think that every elected Republican is embarassed by what happened yesterday.  Some think that slurring the race and sexual preference of their colleagues is just what they deserve.
